International Symposium "SMART MOBILITY FOR SMARTER CITIES"

September 12, 2016

International Symposium "SMART MOBILITY FOR SMARTER CITIES" - September 13, 2016

Smart City is an emerging topic and a winning strategy to cope with severe urban problems such as traffic congestions, pollutions, energy consumption, waste treatment, and severe weather events. Having combined the concepts of digital city, green city, and knowledge city, Smart City is a complex, long-term vision of a better urban area, aiming at reducing its environmental footprint and at creating better quality of life for citizens.

Smart Mobility is one of the key components of the Smart City concept. Urban mobility becomes smart when smart actors take advantage of smart technology in the context of smart regulations, policies, plans and interactions. In a smart mobility system, real-time big data is collected from, shared among and used by management authorities, travellers, vehicles, and infrastructure. Decision makers integrate and analyse data, make short- and long-term predictions based on the resulting information, and take actions to improve travel experience and system operations while reducing resources consumption and environmental impacts.

Smart and connected vehicles; alternative fuel and electric vehicles; car and bike sharing schemes; vehicle tracking technologies; advanced traveller real-time information; smart booking, hailing and ticketing systems; communication through social media and virtual networks are but a few of the phenomena that characterise cities’ changing mobility paradigms; more will be developing. Nowadays, people want to buy mobility packages and vehicle manufacturers are restyling themselves as mobility service providers. Further research is clearly needed in concepts, approaches, technologies and behaviours related to smart urban mobility systems.

This Symposium is aimed to bring together international experts, scholars and policy-makers to present and discuss case studies and the best practices on Smart Urban Mobility. We look for papers dealing with visions, policy and plans, case studies, evaluation, analysis and simulation of urban smart mobility systems in the contexts of developed and developing cities.

iRAP data collection training course in Ho Chi Minh city

October 11, 2015

In February 2015, Bloomberg Philanthropies selected 10 cities and five countries to participate in a new phase of the foundation’s Global Road Safety Initiative, which aims to reduce fatalities and injuries from road traffic crashes. With a new commitment over five years (2015-19), the program will work at both the national level and the city level to implement proven road safety interventions.

The Global Road Safety Facility (GRSF) is a partner in the initiative and will help the selected countries and cities assess high-risk roads, provide technical assistance, funding and advisory services, and make policy recommendations for multi-sectorial integration of safety into road projects.  To assist in this, GRSF is partnering with the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP).

In Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), iRAP assessments will focus on the Bus Rapid Transit  (“BRT”)  corridor  between  An  Lac  in  the  southwest  of  HCMC  to  Rach  Chiec  in the northeast of HCMC which is being developed as part of the World Bank-financed Ho Chi Minh City Green Transport Development project.[1] The iRAP activities will include: baseline assessments of the existing road; assessments of the BRT designs; and post-construction assessments.
